  • SOUND PATTERNING I: METRE AND RHYTHM

    READING & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

    1.   We will start by discussing Shelley's Ozymandias, Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 and Swift's 'A Modest Proposal' and comment on their use of irony.
      STUDY the handout
on irony (under Week 4) and MAKE NOTES about how these three works rely on different types of irony in communicating their message. What is that message in each?
    2. Find out what metre and rhythm are in terms of poetry writing and appreciation. Why are metre and rhythm important in poetry; how has their application and significance changed over the past centuries and why?
    3. Read the poem by William Blake assigned for this week and determine how metre and rhythm help to shape the meaning (we’ll go back to the other poems in the file in one of the following weeks).

PRINT OUT the poems for this week unless you can handwrite in your appliance.
