Transnational History of Contemporary Europe
Winter Semester, 2023-2024, Lectures: Wednesday 9:30-10:50, Seminars: Per Group
Lectures by Associate Professors Adrian Brisku (Ph.D.) and Kateřina Kralová (Ph.D.), Seminars (Groups 1 and 3) PhDr. Jiří Kocián, Ph.D., (Group 2) PhDr. Barbora Menclová, Ph.D., (Group 4) Tereza Juhászová, MA
A relatively new perspective – representing the "spatial turn" in historical studies – transnational history of contemporary Europe is an insightful approach to understanding and analysing themes and trends in modern European history that go beyond the exceptionalisms of the Continent"s national histories and nation-states. More concretely, transnational history analyses cross-border connections and parallel developments among territories and interactions of people, ideas, capital and institutions with the effect of demonstrating historically achieved and/or failed political, political-economic, social and cultural transformations. Offered in lecture and seminar formats, this course provides students of political science, international relations and European studies with a sound critical understanding of several historical themes that still matter across European politics, economy, culture and society(-ies).

Students will participate in group assignments in the form of poster presentations, presented in an open-space mini-conference format on site of the Jinonice campus on Monday, 4.12.2023.
In the form of a poll open here between October 12 and October 30, students will be able to choose from among ten groups elaborating a project on one of the significant Themes of Transnationality connecting the present and past, defined by the teachers of the course.
The task completion will take place between November 1 and November 28 and consist of three milestones each group will have to match via partial submissions through a module here in Moodle (one submission per group each time). The final version of the poster will be submitted by November 28. The program administration will handle the printing of the posters.
How to approach the poster topic?
- Think about relevant or pressing contemporary issues within your selected themes and try to project them into the scope of transnational history.
- You can approach the topic from conceptual or empirical perspectives, combine those, or even bring a new experimental angle
- The ratio of visual vs. textual information is up to you, but bear in mind that a standalone poster has to be able to communicate a narrative
- Please use the fora provided below to mark down your discussion and progress; we would like to see all of the working group members contributing
- Below, you can also find some examples of posters prepared by various international BA and MA student groups in several different courses; do not take those as literal templates rather identify what you like or dislike about their content and design
How to format the posters?
It would be ideal to adapt the quality and format of the used text and graphic material to approximately the dimensions of 1.5 m x 1 m printed on canvas. Bear in mind:
1) Font sizes
2) Quality of photographs
3) The graphic design overall
As for content, each poster has to include:
1) Title
2) Subtitle: (Optional)
3) Your names
4) We recommend four narrative blocs: introductory, content & examples, summarizing (depends on your approach)
5) Sources/bibliography
6) Logos of the institutions: EPS, Institute of International Studies, Charles University
7) Visual elements (photographs, pictures, graphs, archival documents, maps, etc.) – all annotated with sources (Follow the copyrights!!!)

You can choose four options in order of personal preference from the following ten themes of transnational history. This poll aims to facilitate a choice of preference for everybody; however, each group is limited to a maximum of 8 members. In case of an overcrowding of individual themes, we will sort the group membership according to the order of answer submission time.
