Section outline

  • This week we are focusing on English! First you will have a chance to improve your vocabulary in a collocation exercise; then you will use your newly acquired knowledge in interpreting into English; and finally you will dissect your interpreting in order to further improve your English formulations.

The topic for this week is one dreaded by many interpreters - economics. As you well know, in order to interpret we as interpreters need to understand the speech - not only in terms of vocabulary, but more importantly, its underlying principles. For a speech laced with economics (which otherwise can be about a completely unrelated topic), this means understanding at least basic economic principles. This can prove problematic for many interpreters (as at least some of them decided to study languages to avoid Maths :D).

As it is usually better to confront our fears head on rather than hide under the bed, that's what we will do this week. The collocation exercise also includes follow-up questions concerning some basic economics. These too you have to answer in English to further enhance your skills.

Please go through the tasks in the given order. If you want, you can complete each of the tasks separately.
