More Slowly or Faster - Grading Adverbs
Adverbs (příslovce) can be mostly formed by adding the suffix “–ly” to adjectives (přídavné jméno). When you want to grade them (stupňovat) you put “more” and (the) “most” in front of the adverb (you do the same when grading long adjectives).
Adjective – > Adverb
An original picture – > he treated the subject originally
(jaký? originální) – > (jak? originálně)
Grading
a more/ the most original picture – > he did it more/ most originally
(originálnější, nejoriginálnější) – > (originálněji, nejoriginálněji)
More examples:
colorful – > colorfully
more/ the most colorful – more/ most colorfully
slow – > slowly
slower/ the slowest – more/ most slowly
Exceptions to the Rule, as Always
1: words fast, early, late, hard remain the same. They can be both adjectives and adverbs:
a fast train (jaký? rychlý) x he drove very fast (jak? rychle)
2: when you want to change word “friendly” into adverb, you must use the following construction: in a/ an + adj.+ way
friendly – > in a friendly way/ manner
The same construction can be also used for other adjectives:
You can say both
He combined the materials cleverly or He combined the materials in a clever way.(obojí znamená chytře)
stupidly or in a stupid way
3: (good) – > well is graded the same way as good, i.e. you use forms better and best.
(a better/ the best solution) – he painted better than the others/ best of all
(lepší/ nejlepší řešení) x lépe než ostatní/ nejlépe ze všech
4: (bad) – > badly is graded the same as bad, i.e. you use worse and worst
(a worse/ the worst quality) x she made it worse than me/ worst of all
(horší/ nejhorší) x hůře, nejhůře
