To receive the final grade, all students must submit a written research essay 2000-2500 words long on a subject discussed in class or agreed upon in advance with the lecturers. Possible topics may include: 

  1. The Main Themes of Islamic Anti-Jewish Polemics: Jews in the Quran and the Islamic tradition
  2. The prediction of Muhammad and Islam in Jewish Scriptures
  3. The Falsification of Scripture Muslim anti-Jewish Polemics and the Jewish Respons
  4. Jewish Converts to Islam and their Role in Islamic-Jewish Polemic
  5. The Story of Muhammadʼs Jewish and Christian Companions
  6. Converts and their Role in Medieval Jewish-Christian Polemic
  7. How did the Mendicant Orders Shape the Medieval Jewish-Christian Polemic?
  8. Public Disputations with the Jews
  9. The Use of the Gospels in Jewish Polemic against Christianity

The essay must be written in English, with the author’s name and study programme clearly indicated on the first page. All literature used must be properly cited (preferably according to the Chicago Manual of Style). If possible, the text should contain no typos (use spell check), the pages should be numbered. The essay must be submitted by 15 June 2023 to either one of the lecturers via e-mail

The essay will form the basis of the discussion during the oral exam. It is not possible to sit the oral exam without having submitted the essay. Please allow at least seven days between essay submission and oral exam. The earlier before the deadline you submit the essay, the better (for you). The official exam period will last until the end of July 2021, but let us know in advance if you would like to sit the exam in July.
