Hello everyone, there is no observation sheet here, but we all remember the lovely lesson on the Magical Walpurgis Night by Maruška and Nicole, so we can still discuss the method. I'm going to kick it off by throwing in a few keywords. Let me know if you have different ones.

content aim (subject content) + language aim

comprehension

negotiation of meaning

tolerating uncertainty along the path of learning

dialogic talk

scaffolding

If I had an observation sheet, the only 'unticked' area would probably be corrective feedback because people were hardly making any mistakes, so Maruška and Nicole didn't really have much to correct.

What would probably be highlighted in the observation sheet would be the cultural aspect. One of the aims in CLIL is to develop intercultural communicative skills, so the aim 'to be able to speak about Czech customs in English' is perfect. As I said in class, trying to explain our culture to a foreigner increases our awareness of what it actually is. Moreover, the lesson allowed the students to compare the Czech version of the custom with traditions in other countries.

Let me know of your additional thoughts based on your observations sheets.

I look forward to your comments:)

Hello :),

I would like to add some points, which I consider important as well in this method.

The central role of materials (the lesson builds on a particular material, which might include intercultural awareness - that was already mentioned).

Peer support (for example peer teaching, working in groups).

Role of preconceptions in conscious learning of Ss.

Good evening,

I would also like to share my additional thoughts about this method. They are:

- development of self-confidence and autonomy

- authenticity – Ss' interests and needs, current materials (situation specific)

- various types of corrective feedback is provided by the teacher (repetition of the error, implicit correction, explicit correction …)

- cognitively demanding and challenging tasks

- learner centred – active participation

Hello everyone,

I agree with all your comments which are mostly similar to mine. I would add to my list of key-words following points: learner-centered - active participation, authencity (Ss' interests and needs).

I think that the most important features are written here, I can only add a few points:

  • language as a means of understanding the content (likewise written already)
  • central role of lexis
  • grammar which enables learners to express the content
  • discuss and communicate the content.

Thanks

Šárka

Hello :)

I agree with all your points and would add some I think that are important too.

  • extra focus on Ss interest
  • material is the key
  • involving several skills together
  • vocabulary register

Good evening,

I like all the ideas you all mentioned. I want to share with you few things I have in my observation sheet:

-Lessons are based on reading/listening.

-Language is approached lexically rather than grammatically.

My key words are mostly the same as yours. I will complete mine with vocabulary register.

Thank you for sharing.

Adéla

Hello everyone,

I'm sad that I weren't able to participate in this seminar. It sounds great!

I agree with all of the points you have already mentioned. I think that there isn't much to add, but I would like to mention at least a few of the traits that, in my opinion, also belong to this method.

  • helping learners to develop coping strategies
  • interaction and cooperation
  • jigsaw tasks
  • various types of activities and teaching aids
  • related to cognition - learning and thinking processes

I would also like to summarize some of the main goals of this method:

  • development of intercultural communication skills
  • preparation for internationalization
  • subject-specific target language terminology
  • development of oral skills
  • diversity of used methods and forms of practice during lessons
  • increase of learners’ motivation

Thank you for all of your ideas, I will add the ones I didn't think of to my observation sheet. Have a great week! 😊
