*Linking expressions - position in a sentence

Completion requirements

We are going to focus for the three linking expressions are used in academic writing. In particular, we will focus of their positions in a sentence (sentence-initial, clause-initial, other) and the punctuation around them.

1. Go to MICUSP

MICUSP

2. In the STUDENT LEVELS section choose only graduate students (levels G1-3).

3. In the NATIVENESS section choose native English speakers.

4. In the DISCIPLINES section choose Linguistics.

5. Study the options in the other sections, but you do not have to choose any restrictions.

6. Type however in the SEARCH box at the top of the screen and press the SEARCH button.

7. Study the individual examples (you may want to see all individual citations by clicking Show all for each paper) and answer the following questions:

  • In what sentence positions does however occur? Which is most/least frequent?
  • What does the choice of the sentence position depend on?
  • What interesting facts did you discover about punctuation?

8. Write up your answers with examples taken from the corpus and submit the file by clicking on the box below.
