  • Seminar 04 - 17 March (ONLINE)

    There will be no teaching in R124 this week - your learning is ONLINE so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download the Seminar 04 PDF 'Observing Young Children Learning' and read through the slides carefully.

    2. Watch the two videos in the folder for this seminar at slide 3 and slide 17.

    3. Complete the child observation activity at slide 18.

    4. Keep a copy of the notes you make for the activity - we may discuss them when normal teaching resumes.

    5. Download the Suggested Reading PDF at slide 20 and read as much of it as you can. 

    6. Make a note of anything from this week's ONLINE teaching that you would like your lecturer to explain further when normal teaching resumes. 

    7. If you have some spare time you could review the teaching content PDFs and watch the videos from Seminar 01, 02 and 03.

  • Seminar 05 - 23 March (ONLINE)

    Your learning is ONLINE this week so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download the Seminar 05 PDF 'Young Children’s Learning and Relationships' and read through the slides carefully.

    2. At slide 17 watch the short video 'Positive Relationships' in the folder for this seminar.

    3. Make some brief notes in response to the 4 questions at slides 15 and 16.

    4. Keep a copy of the notes you make for the activity - we may discuss them when normal teaching resumes.

    5. Download the Suggested Reading PDF at slide 24 and read as much of it as you can.

    6. Make a note of anything from this week's ONLINE teaching that you would like your lecturer to explain further when normal teaching resumes.

    7. If you have some spare time you could download and listen to the podcast 'Attachment is important for every child’ (44 mins) in the folder for this seminar.

  • Seminar 06 - 31 March (ONLINE)

    Your learning is ONLINE this week so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download the Seminar 06 PDF 'Historical Pioneers and Young Children’s Learning' and read through the slides carefully.

    2. Click on the link to the Suggested Reading PDF at slide 11 - it is quite a long read but has some nice pictures! 

    3. At slide 28 watch the short video 'John Amos Comenius' in the folder for this seminar.

    4. Think about the questions on slide 29 and make some brief notes - they may be useful for your Assessed Coursework on this course,

    5. Make a note of anything from this week's ONLINE teaching that you would like to discuss in the ZOOM seminar on Tuesday 7 April at 11.00am.

    6. If you have some spare time you could click on the OPTIONAL Reading to extend your knowledge of Friedrich Froebel.

  • Seminar 07 - 7 April (ONLINE)

    Your learning is ONLINE this week so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download and review the PowerPoint PDF - Assessed Coursework 01. 

    2. Join a ZOOM meeting with Philip Selbie and other students in the group at 11.00am - an invitation will be sent to all students on Sunday evening. At the meeting there will be time to discuss the requirements for your first piece of assessed coursework.  During the meeting there will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the assessment task.  

    3. After the ZOOM meeting you should complete the QUIZ - 'Historical Pioneers and Young Children’s Learning' based upon the content from Seminar 06.  This is a quick multiple choice 'memory test' only - the grade will not be part of your final grade for the course.  

  • Seminar 08 - 14 April (ONLINE)

    Your learning is ONLINE this week so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download the Seminar 08 PDF 'Young Children’s Learning and Schemas' and read through the slides carefully.

    2. At slide 7 watch the short video 'Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development' in the folder for this seminar.

    3. Think about the questions on slides 12, 13 and 14 and consider making some short notes for yourself.  

    4. Click on the link to the Suggested Reading PDF at slide 15 and read as much of it as possible to deepen your knowledge of Schemas.

    5. What have you learned this week that might be helpful for your Child Observation Sheet and Assessed Coursework 01?

    Your learning is ONLINE this week so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download the Seminar 09 PDF 'Young Children’s Learning and Stories' and read through the slides carefully.

    2. At slide 6 watch the short video 'Rosie's Walk Animation' in the folder for this seminar.

    3. Think about the questions on slides 4, 7 and 13 and consider making some short notes for yourself.  

    4. At slide 14 watch the video 'Picture Book Illustrators' in the folder for this seminar where you will see three picture book authors and their illustrators talking about their work.

    5. If you are interested in learning more about children as narrators click on the link to the OPTIONAL Reading at slide 8 (or below) and read as much of it as possible.

    6. Make sure you understand the writing task for Assessed Coursework 02 on slides 26 and 27.  Have you learned anything this week that might be useful to include in the plans for your essay?

    Note! There will be NO SEMINAR on Tuesday 5 May but you may request an online consultation/tutorial about your essay with the course tutor during that week. You should send an email next week if you wish to agree a suitable date and time with the course tutor.

  • Seminar 10 - 28 April (ONLINE)

    Your learning is ONLINE this week so please follow the instructions below:

    1. Download the Seminar 10 PDF 'Young Children’s Learning and the Future' and read through the slides carefully.

    2. Think about the question on slide 7 and consider making some short notes for yourself.  

    3. At slide 9 watch Video 01 on 'Sustainable Development' in the folder for this seminar.

    4. At slide 25 watch Video 02 'UNCRC Let’s Get it Right' where you will see a short presentation on the importance of the UNCRC. 

    5. If you are interested in reading more about the importance of the envioronment for young children's futures, two URLs will take you to the 'Natural Childhood' report and ‘Developmentally appropriate environmental education for young children’.

    6. Have you learned anything this week that might be useful to include in the plans for your Assessed Coursework 02 essay?  

    Note! There will be no online teaching content next week on Tuesday 5 May so you have time to plan and write your Assessed Coursework 02. If you have any questions about Assessed Coursework 02 you should email the course tutor or you may request a ZOOM consultation/tutorial during next week. You should send an email THIS week if you wish to agree a suitable date and time for a ZOOM consultation/tutorial next week.
