The course will acquaint the students with the rich tradition of the ghost story in the British Isles, from the emergence of the genre through its golden age to the later developments, including weird fiction. The syllabus includes works by the most renowned writers associated chiefly with the genre (M. R. James, V. Paget, J. Buchan, F. E. Benson, A. Machen), but also less-known ventures into the realm of the ghost story by canonical authors known primarily for their works in other forms (Ch. Dickens, E. Gaskell, V. Woolf, E. M. Forster).
