The assassination of President John F. Kennedy
Partly because it happened live on television, partly because of the conspiracy theories that have rumbled on for more than 40 years since, and partly because it was such a devastating shock that a young, popular president and a family man could be gunned down in his prime, the assassination of John F. Kennedy is burned into the consciousness of millions of people of more than one generation.
Dallas , Texas
Having won a very close election against Richard Nixon in 1960, Kennedy´s hopes of winning a second term in 1964 with large enough mandate to push through major civil rights reforms were brutally ended when he was assassinated on 22nd November 1963. Kennedy was sitting next to his wife, Jackie, in an open car, smiling and waving to the cheering crowds as the presidential motorcade passed through the streets of Dallas, Texas. Then shots rang out, the President slumped forward, and a secret serviceman scrambled aboard the limousine – too late to save the life of Kennedy, who, half an hour later, was pronounced dead from shots in the neck and head.
Fifty minutes after the shooting police arrested ex-US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald, who had been seen fleeing the Texas School Book Depository from where the fatal shots were allegedly fired, and later charged him with the murder, But two days later, before he could be brought to trial, Oswald was himself assassinated, fueling rumors that have persisted ever since that he was part of a wider conspiracy.
The Assassination of Harvey Oswald
Millions of Americans wanting to see the man accused of shooting Kennedy tuned in to watch live on television as Oswald was taken through the underground car park of Dallas police headquarters to be transferred to the county jail. Suddenly a large man stepped forward, pushed a revolver into Oswald´s ribs and fired a single, fatal shot whole the escorting officers looked on in disbelief. Oswald died almost instantly and his assassin, strip club owner offered no resistance when arrested. He might have satisfied a public desire for revenge, but he prevented the truth from being firmly established and justice from taking its course that may have well ended in the same way, with the death of Oswald.
