3.2 The Importance of Transparency in Research
What makes sciences unique? There are many different attempts to describe, understand and explain our world or at least part of it: religions; some pieces of fiction (e.g. novels or TV series), and of course science and social science. The key distinguishing feature of science(s) are the methods used by researchers to study the world. So, you probably cannot overestimate the importance of the way you collect your data and analyze them, e.g. in your thesis.
Other scholars need to be able to trust that your research results are reliable. For this purpose, it is not enough that the study is performed correctly (which is, of course, not easy). It is also crucial that the research methods are transparently described. Transparency is necessary because it enables the other scientist not only to learn about the trustworthiness of a study, but also to adopt the study's methods in their own research.
