When talking about portraits we can distinguish among the following basic types:

  • Self portrait -
  • Group Portrait
  • Nude Portrait
  • Equestrian Portrait
  • Formal/ Informal
  • Historical Portrait
  • Celebrity Portrait

And when talking about non-abstract paintings and photos we can generally classify them into the following genres according to what topic they depict:

  • still life - comprising an arrangement of objects (traditionally flowers or kitchen utensils, but almost any household object may be included) laid out on a table
  • biblical scenes, mythologies
  • genre painting -pictures depicting situations and scenes of everyday life
  • portraits
  • animal painting - portrayal of animals
  • and various scapes
    • townscape/ cityscape - townscapes depict cities (urban landscape, veduta - the painted landscape, often cityscapes which were a common 18th century painting thematic
    • skyscape - depictions of clouds, weatherforms, and atmospheric conditions
    • moonscape - show the landscape of a moon, riverscapes - depict rivers or creeks, seascape - depict oceans or beaches
    • landscape - the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition
    • inscape - to convey the psychoanalytic view of the mind as a three-dimensional space)
