Completion requirements

1. Three most popular linking expressions of contrast are: however, nevertheless and nonetheless. Use your intuition. Are the three expressions used with the same frequency? Which is most (least) frequent?

2. Let’s verify your intuitions. We will check the frequency of these three linking expressions in the newly-compiled Michigan Corpus of Upper-Level Student Papers (MICUSP)

  • Go to MICUSP

  • In the DISTRIBUTION ACROSS DISCIPLINES choose the per 10.000 option.
  • Compare the results across the disciplines. Have you noticed anything interesting?
