    Hello, students. This is the Moodle for the course NJAZ174 Anglický jazyk pro pokročilé III for Winter Semester 2020. This is for two separate classes: one class meets every Thursday at 16:30, and the other meets every Monday at 18:10. The material for the two classes will be the same, so I will post it here for both classes.

    We will be doing Units 7 and 8 from Total English Advanced Students’ Book.

    We will also be doing Units 4 and 5 of the ESP book: Angličtina (nejen) pro student MFF UK.

    To get credit for the course it is necessary to do all the work.

  • Students' Book 7.1

    Read and study pages 91-94 in the Students’ Book and do all the exercises.

    You don’t have to hand it in.

  • Students' Book 7.2, ESP p. 44/Ex. 6a-g

    For homework, please do the following exercises in the Students' Book:

    p. 95 / Ex. 1-2

    p. 97 / Ex. 9-11

    In our next lesson we will do p. 95/Ex. 3-4 and p. 96/Ex. 5-6 together.

    In addition, please do p. 44 in the ESP book, Ex. 6(a)-(g).

    If you're not sure how to express mathematical symbols in words in English you should refer to pp. 121-128 in the ESP book.

    It's not necessary to hand this homework in.

    We also went over ESP p. 44 / Ex 6 a-g.

    In  our last lesson ( Mon, Oct 26 ) we did ESP p. 44 / Ex. 5 and the rest of Ex. 6

    We also did the Students' Book p. 97 and 98/Ex. 1.

    Homework:

    • ESP:  study pp. 45-46 (Conic Sections)
    • Student's Book:  read the article on p. 98 (Animals Online) and do p. 99 / Ex 4 a-b

    In our last lesson we covered pp. 99-100 in the Students' Book.

    We also did SB p. 161 and I assigned Ex. 4a for homework, to be handed in.

      Based on the examples on p. 161, write a similar advertisement of similar length. Use the tips given in the green box.

      Please write it in MS Word. It's easiest for me make corrections in MS Word.

    Monday's class (Nov. 9):

    We practiced vocabulary on conic sections from the ESP book pp. 45-46.  Other terms also came up, such as asymptote, sine and "axes" vs. "axes" (pronunciation).

    HW: 

    • SB p. 102 / Ex. 2. (Make a list on your own and next time we will do the activity in groups.)
    • SB p. 104. Pay particular attention to Ex. 1 and Ex. 2. We will talk about it in class next time
    • Also, please do this super special extra activity, which I didn't mention in class:

    Read the SHORT STORY "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov and be prepared to answer questions about it. (It's short; 1000 words; 2.5 normal pages.)

    We talked about the short story. Did a group activity.

    We tied down loose ends in Chapter 7, namely relative clauses.

    We started Unit 8 in the SB. We covered p. 105.

    We talked about issues affecting us these days.

    We talked about logic and logical fallacies and for homework I asked the students to prepare a list of 3 logical fallacies to present next time.

    In the SB we did p. 107, Grammar: Reported Speech, and the speaking activity on p. 108.

    Remember:  the word RECOMMEND does not ordinarily take the infinitive with "to", but it can take the gerund.

    Examples:

    "I recommend (that) you show up early for the exam. It starts at 9 AM sharp and latecomers will not be allowed in."

    "He recommended (that) we not choose "Calculus for Dummies" as our specialized text for the oral part of the exam."

    "I recommend visiting the National Technical Museum in Prague. Lots of interesting exhibits there."

    "Ï recommend not wearing a face mask if you're healthy. You're more likely to catch a a bacterial infection from the mask."

    • We talked about logical fallacies and manipulative language and gave examples.

    For HW, students should find one real life example (from the "news", from conversations with friends, from overhearing others' conversations...) and present it in class. (I put the word "news" in quotation marks because that concept itself is manipulative. Do you agree?)

    • We did SB p.114 / Ex. 11, 13 as well as SB p. 162 / Ex. 2-4a

    For HW, write an essay as per the instructions on p. 162 / Ex. 4a-b.
