This course offers an introduction to various themes connected with the geopolitics of security in the contemporary Middle East. Rather than merely listing various conflicts, malicious non-state armed actors, and regional and global actors that shape Middle Eastern politics and security, this course aims to offer students a range of analytical tools for approaching regional geopolitics from both mainstream and critical perspectives. The course thus emphasises connecting contemporary geopolitical issues to their theoretical and conceptual reflection with the aim of providing students with insights into both academic debates and rapidly unfolding regional politics. It specifically seeks to prompt critical interrogation of dominant debates in geopolitics by pointing to the ambiguous, political nature of space and security and asking whose security matters, how, and to what effects.
