Digital media now permeate nearly every dimension of society and culture. They offer numerous opportunities as well as significant challenges by fundamentally redefining the role of media in everyday life and by shaping complex interconnections among media, technology, and society. This relationship is undergoing profound transformations, as new technologies, novel forms of entertainment, emerging spaces for political debate, and evolving models of participation and labor take shape online. For more than three decades, the tradition of qualitative social research has been rethinking, revising, and adapting ethnographic methods to examine how digital media and information technologies reshape political, economic, and cultural landscapes. Building on this trajectory, this course provides an overview of the adaptation of ethnography to digital life. It introduces students to the principles of digital ethnography while offering hands-on research experience through the practical application of ethnographic concepts and methods.
