One of the discoveries of Corpus Linguistics is that not only words have their preferred grammatical patterns. Grammatical patterns also have their preferred words. Francis and Hudson (2000), the authors of this new approach to grammar, state: “the different senses of words will tend to be distinguished by different patterns, and … particular patterns will tend to be associated with lexical items that have particular meanings.” (p. 83) This means that different meanings of one word will usually occur in different grammatical structures and one grammatical structure will be filled with words of similar meaning.
