Hedging in Spoken Academic Language

Completion requirements

This activity demonstrates another way of applying corpora for teaching. Instead of making students consult the corpus, as in the activities above, the teacher uses the corpus herself/himself to develop educational materials. This activity comes from the MICASE ESL/EAP Teaching materials, which are no longer available online. The handout is attached below.

1. Follow the activities in this handout. Note how the corpus was used to prepare them. Look up a few chosen examples in the MICASE corpus and see them in a larger context.

2. Reflect on the activities.

  • Were the explanations useful?
  • Were they sufficient?
  • Were they excessive
  • Were the activities helpful?

You do not need to submit anything, just think about the answers.
