Week 4 (10.3.): Music venues 2: DIY music venues. Gentrification.

Opened: Sunday, 1 October 2017, 12:00 AM
Due: Tuesday, 10 March 2020, 3:30 PM

Readings: Frith, Simon, 2012. “The Materialist Approach to Live Music.” Live Music Exchange (find here: http://livemusicexchange.org/blog/live-music-101-1-the-materialist-approach-to-live-music-simon-frith/).  Holt, Fabian. 2013. “The Advent of Rock Clubs for the Gentry: Berlin, Copenhagen, and New York.” 153-160, 168-170 (skip Copenhagen and New York case studies; in Musical Performance and the Changing City: Post-Industrial Contexts in Europe and the United States).

Assignment: What is Frith’s approach to studying music venues (discuss, essay style)? Make notes regarding the main aspects of research that would be useful in your own study (can be bullet points). What types of clubs are discussed in Holt’s reading, and what are their characteristics and differences (discuss, essay style)? What are the criteria used for the differentiation between these different types of venues (list all of the criteria, in bullet style; these should be useful for your own research)? Compare Frith’s article, are there any similarities between both articles, regarding their approach? Write one paragraph.
