      English B1. E-Learning – Syllabus

       

      Annotation of the course:

      The course English B1. E-Learning English Language Course is a one-semester course divided into 13 blocks copying 13 weeks of the semester. It is designed for the students with special education needs who need to complement, and/or clarify their knowledge at lower levels of English (B1) within the grammar or vocabulary fields and loosely follow the previous courses English A1 (in Czech only) and English A2 (combination of English and Czech translations). The completion of these two courses (A1 and A2) is not required for the enrolment into this course (B1), but still students interested in this course should have the knowledge of at least these two levels (A1 and A2).

      There are regular online consultation hours scheduled for Tuesdays 7:10 pm - 8:40 pm (19:10 - 20:40). These are voluntary. As there are also some extra, interactive communication activities, the students are advised to attend at least 3 of these sessions. These online consultation hours will be realized via Zoom.

      Anotace kurzu:

      Tento kurz anglického jazyka English B1. E-Learning je jednosemestrálním kurzem, který je rozdělený do 13 bloků kopírujících 13 týdnů semestru. Je určen primárně pro student se speciálními vzdělávacími potřebami, kteří si potřebují doplnit a/nebo ujasnit znalosti z nižších úrovní angličtiny (B1), co se oblasti gramatiky a slovní zásoby týče. Volně navazuje na kuzry Angličitna A1 (pouze v českém jazyce) a Angličtna A2 (v českém jazyce s anglickými překlady). Absolvování těchto kurzů není podmínkou pro zápis do tohoto kurzu (B1), přesto by student, kteří mají o kurz zájem, měli mít úroveň svých znalostí alespoň na úrovni A1 + A2.

      V rámci kurzu jsou nabízeny pravidelné online konzultace, které jsou vypsány v úterky 19:10 – 20:40. Tyto konzultace jsou dobrovolné. Vzhledem k tomu, že se v rámci konzultací zaměříme i na komunikativní activity, bylo by dobré, aby se student zúčastnili alespoň 3 z těchto setkání, které se odehrají v prostředí Zoom.

      The programme of the course: Practising the language skills (reading, listening and writing in the e-learning part of the course – realized via Moodle). Grammar and vocabulary will be practised on the texts and listening at the B1 level. The pronunciation and speaking skills will be focused on during the online consultation hours. The individual weeks follow the units of the textbook Navigate B1 (see below).

      Program kurzu: Procvičování jazykových dovedností (čtení, poslech a psaní, které je realizováno v e-lerningové části kurzu prostřednictvím Moodle). Na základě textů a poslechů na úrovni B1 se bude procvičovat gramatika a slovní zásoba. Výslovnost a mluvení pak v rámci dobrovolných konzultací. Jednotlivé týdny odpovídají lekcím z učebnice Navigate B1 (viz níže).

    • Pravidelné konzultace - úterý 19:10 - 20:40

    • Tyto konzultace nejsou povinné. Účast je pouze doporučena, nikoliv vyžadována a není tedy podmínkou pro zápočet.

      Během konzultací mohu zodpovídat vaše případné dotazy k látce z uplynulého týdne (uplynulých týdnů). Dále prostor daný v rámci konzultace využijeme k jedné komunikativní aktivitě z učebnice Navigate B1 - Pre-intermediate - Video, které je součástí každé lekce.

      Konzultace probíhají přes Zoom. Pokud se chcete připojit online, nemusíte se předem hlásit. Je také možné přijít po domluvě emailem osobně.

    • Introductory Video and Presentation with Comments

    • This week's topic is food, so also the vocabulary focuses on food. I believe that a lot of the words will not be new for you. The grammar issues are the use of -ing form which to a certain point is also just a revision and then the new issue - passive. 

      As always watch the introductory video (see the vocabulary food in the dictionary), then prepare the handouts for the presentation with comments so that you can work and take notes and then have a look at the grammar guidebook if you need to.

      Tématem tohoto týdne je jídlo, takže i slovní zásoba bude zaměřena na jídlo. Věřím, že hodně slovíček pro vás nebude nových. Gramatikou je použití ingového tvaru, které do jisté míry je také opakováním, a novým jevem - trpný rod, tzv. pasiv.

      Jako vždy, podívejte se na úvodní video (podívejte se na slovní zásobu ve slovníčku), poté si připravte pracovní listy k prezentaci s komentářem (audiovýkladu), abyste mohli pracovat a dělat si poznámky a poté se podívejte na gramatickou příručku, pokud to budete potřebovat.

    • The following presentation is about 35 minutes long. However, it might get longer as you might need to stop it to complete the tasks. Prepare the handout so that you can work and take notes. Stop the video whenever you need more time for completion of the tasks. 

      Následjující prezentace trvá asi 35 minut. Nicméně se může prodloužit, protože možná budete prezentaci zastavovat, abyste mohli doknčit úkoly. Připravte si pracovní listy, abyste mohli plnit úkoly a dělat si poznámky. Zastavte si video, kdykoliv to budete potřebovat pro dokončení úkoly.

    • Exercises - Unit 10

    • There are two exercises. Exercise 1 practises -ing forms (within 3 tasks - short answers) and Exercise 2 - the passive (within 3 tasks - two short answers and one drag and drop). There are time limits and you need to get at least 60% of correct answer in each of them. For more details see the particular exercise.

      Máte zde dvě cvičení. Cvičení 1 procvičuje tzv. ingový tvar (v rámci 3 úkolů - vpisované odpovědi) a Cvičení 2 - trpný rod (v rámci 3 úkolů - dvakrát vpisované odpovědi a jeden drag and drop - přetahované odpovědi). Jsou nastaveny časové limity a je třeba získat alespoň 60% správných odpovědí. Detailnější informace viz jednotlivá cvičení.

      1) This subsection on food vocabulary starts with a list of words from the Navigate B1 sources - wordlists. There is always the English word, the pronunciation and an example sentence. Try to complete the list with translations and then check with the dictionary (the link is below the pdf copy).

      2) Then there is a link to the Dictionary from the course A1 for you to revise or learn the words you do not know.

      3) A listening/reading activity: There is a link to a YouTube video on healthy and unhealthy lifestyle. The video is with subtitles and there is also a video script. Either watch the video with subtitles or follow the video script, so that you can make notes and/or highlight the words you do not know and you might want to translate later. There is also Exercise 3 - true x false, you can either complete it while listening to/watching the video or as a reading comprehension with the video script. The choice is yours. You can also prepare the answers with a paper version (see the pdf copy - true x false questions). Then enter the answers in the interactive Exercise 3.

      4) Finally there is Exercise 4 with exercises from the coursebook. There are several tasks, inluding some listening.

      For both exercises 3 and 4: there is no time limit, but you need to get at least 60% of correct answers.

      1) Tato podsekce ke slovní zásobě - jídlo začíná seznamem slovíček z materiálů k Navigate B1 - seznamy slovíček. Vždy máte v seznamu anglické slovíčku, výslovnost a poté příkladovou větu. Pokuste se doplnit seznam překlady a poté si je zkontrolujte se slovníčkem (odkaz je pod pdf kopií).

      2) Poté zde máte odkaz na slovníček z kurzu A1, abyste si mohli některá slovíčka zopakovat, případně se nová naučit.

      3) Aktivita zaměřená na poslech/četní: Nejprve zde máte odkaz na video na YouTube k tématu zdravý a nezdravý životní styl. Video je s titlky a také zde máte přepis videa. Buď se podívejte na video s titulky nebo s přepisem, abyste si mohli dělat poznámky a/nebo zvýraznit neznámá slovíčka, která si později chcete přeložit. Také je zde cvičení 3 - otázky pravda x nepravda, které buď vypracujete s poslechem, nebo s přepisem jako porozumění psanému textu. Výběr je na vás. Také si můžete odpovědi připravit s papírovou verzí (viz pdf kopie - true x false questions). Poté doplňte odpovědi do interaktivního cvičení 3.

      4) Nakonec zde máte cvičení 4 se cvičeními z učebnice. Jedná se o několik úkolů včetně poslechu.

      Pro obě cvičení 3 a 4 platí: není nastaven časový limit, ale je třeba získat minimálně 60 % správných odpovědí.

      Food (and drinks) vocabulary is often uncountable, so if we want to count food (and drinks) we need to use "units" which we can call "food containers". There is one exercise (Exercise 5) with three tasks (2 are taken from our coursebook - Navigate B1 Pre-intermediate and 1 from Essential Grammar in Use - this one is not only about the containers but about units in general). Before you try to complete the exercise, have a look at the dictionary (see the link below) in which you find the relevant vocabulary for this exercise.

      Slovíčka z tématu jídlo (a pití) jsou často nepočitatelná, takže když chceme počítat jídlo (a pití) musíme používat jednotky, kterým můžeme říkat "potravinové obaly". Máte zde jedno cvičení (cvičení 5) se třemi úkoly (2 jsou z naší učebnice - Naviage B1 Pre-intermediate a 1 z Essential Grammar in Use - tento úkol není jen o obalech, ale všeobecně jednotkách). Před tím, než se pokusíte cvičení vypracovat, se podívejte do slovníčku (viz link níže), ve kterém najdete relevantní slovní zásobu k tomuto cvičení.

      What are these so-called reference words? Why do we use them? These are the questions that should be answered in the following Exercise 6. Go through the exercise, follow the instructions and as promised you should find the answers.

      Co jsou "odkazující slovíčka"? Proč je používáme? Toto jsou otázky, na které by vám mělo odpovědt následující cvičení 6. Projděte si tedy toto cvičení, postupujte dle instrukcí a jak bylo slíbeno, měli byste odpovědi najít.

    • Advice and Tips - words with more than one meaning

    • This week's advice and tips deal with words that can have more meanings and we need to understand the meaning from the context. Open this Exercise 7 and go through it step by step as it starts with some explanation and then there is some practice. It is nothing surprising that some words can have differnet meanings. We have these words in our language as well. What we need to be careful with in English are the situations when we do not know the paricular meaning for a certain context. We, therefore, have to be careful if we know what the word means but the meaning doesn't really make sence in a certain context and in that case we need to look up a different meaning that does make sence.

      Tento týden se rady a tipy zabývají slovy, která mohou mít více významů a my tyto různé významy musíme chápat z kontextu. Otevřete si cvičení 7 a projděte si ho krok za krokem, jelikož začíná vysvětlením a poté následuje procvičování. Není nic překvapivého, že některá slova mají více významů. Taková slova máme i v našem jazyce. To, na co si musíme dávat pozzor v angličtině, jsou situace, kdy neznáme konkrétní význam v určitém kontextu. Proto musíme být opatrvní v případě, že sice slovíčko známe, ale tento význam nedává v určitém kontextu smysl, v tom případě si musíme vyhledat jiný význam, který ten smysl dává.

    • University Life - writing: a (restaurant) review + using apostrophe

    • Let's now get back to the topic food and let's have a look at restaurants. It can sometimes happen that we are not satisfied, the food is cold, the service is not good, our table is dirty, we were charged too much etc.

      So, at first we are going to have a look at some problems we might have in a restaurant, especially some phrases we can use when complaining, making a request, apologizing etc.

      The second part of this topic is a restaurant review, which is something that can prevent us from ending up in a bad restaurant. This part practises the reading, and vocabulary again.

      Finally, there is one task for you with focus on use of apostrophe.

      There are 3 exercises:

      Exercise 8 - problems in a restaurant: 3 tasks - listening and vocabulary introduction
      Exercise 9 - a restaurant review: 2 tasks - reading and vocabulary
      Exercise 10 - using apostrophe:  2 tasks - explanation and review correction

      A review can be written on anything, including differnet things relating to universities, you can also apply the vocabulary you learn for problems in restaurants with unversity canteens and cafés, and you will definitely need the apostrophe when writing anything related not only to university.

      Vraťme se nyní k tématu jídlo a podívejme se na restaurace. Může se někdy stát, že nejsme spokojeni, jídlo je studené, obsluha není dobrá, náš stůl je špinavý, naúčtovali nám vyšší částku atd.

      Takže nejprve se podíváme na problémy, které v restauracích můžeme mít, obzvláště na fráze, které můžeme použít, když si stěžujeme, o něco žádáme, omlouváme se atd.

      Nakonec zde máte úkol zaměřený na apostrof.

      Máme zde 3 cvičení:

      Exercise 8 - problems in a restaurant: 3 úkoly - poslech a představení slovní zásoby
      Exercise 9 - a restaurant review: 2 úkoly - čtení a slovní zásoba
      Exercise 10 - using apostrophe: 2 úkoly - vysvětlení a opravení recenze

      Druhá část tohoto tématu je recenze restaurace, což je něco, co nás může ochránit od toho, abychom šli do nějaké špatné restaurace. Procvičení zde je zaměřené na porozumění psanému textua slovní zásobě.

      Recenze může být napsána na cokoliv, včetně různých věcí spojených s univerzitami, také můžete použít slovní zásobu, kterou se naučíte k problémům v restauracích s univerzitními jídelnami a kavárnami, a definitivně budete potřebovat apostrof, když budete psát cokoliv, co se vzathuje (nejen) k univerzitě.

    • For the consultation hours prepare the following materials. You can either print them, if you prefer working with paper version, or if you feel fine with the electronic version, you do not need to print. However, bear in mind that you might be working online which can complicate the work with e-version of the copy.

      Na následující konzultaci si připravte následující materiály. Buď si je můžete vytisknout, pokud se vám lépe pracuje s papírovou verzí, nebo pokud se cítíte jistí v práci s elektronickou verzí, tisknout nemusíte. Nicméně, mějte na paměti, že budete pracovat online, což může práci s e-verzí kopie zkomplikovat.
