Although focused on the work of a single author, this course is designed as an introduction to media studies and genetic criticism. Beckett’s short texts for radio, theatre, cinema, and television will be discussed in the context of their respective media, allowing students to explore the concepts of medium-specificity, intermediality, and adaptation. Special attention will be paid to the ways in which Beckett uses language and technology to shape meaning. Supplementary resources – such as Beckett’s correspondence, notes on performances, manuscript materials, and audio-visual recordings – will be used to elucidate the genesis of, and examine variation in, his work. Additionally, the resources of the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project (http://beckettarchive.org) will be used to introduce students to the potentials and benefits of archival research. Previous familiarity with Beckett’s life and work is desirable but not essential.
