This course is offered mainly to foreign students in the framework of TEMA program, and to MA students of SOKD. The course focuses on various aspects of the making of Europe as primarily cultural, but also economic and political unit in the course of the 20th century. The course provides also an introduction into major historiographical debates concerning 20th century history of Europe.  Each class is divided into three parts –  an introduction of a few crucial historiographical concepts and/or historical events is followed by a short lecture; last third of each session is devoted to the discussion of the assigned readings.

Credit for the course will be granted on the basis of 1) attendance, 2) class participation (2 in-class tests), and 3) the quality of the final term paper.

Attendance:

Participation on seminars is compulsory. More than two missed classes automatically result in a failing grade.

Class participation 40%:

Students are responsible for reading the required material prior to  the class for which it has been assigned. Readings serve as a basis for class discussions. Thoughtful reading of the assigned texts is a fundamental requirement of the course and will be tested on a regular basis (2-3 short in-class tests). Assigned readings can be found on the Moodle (ca 30 pages per week).

Term Paper 60%:

Each student has to submit a term paper - an essay on the subject agreed with the lecturer of the course; deadline for the selection of the topic is April 15th. Students must submit their papers by email a week after the end of the semester at the latest. The required length is 3000 words for MA students, 1000 for undergraduates.
